Apart from being a wide-bandgap semiconductor, diamond also provides a powerful platform for unveiling new quantum phenomena for the development of quantum electronics. The most effective method to tune the electronic properties of diamond is to introduce substitutional boron dopants into this material. Upon doping, diamond undergoes the insulator−metal transition when the boron concentration is about 3×1020 cm−3. At even higher boron doping levels, diamond becomes superconducting. Synthetic diamond can be not only superconducting but also ferromagnetic. Recently, our research on hydrogenated boron-doped nanodiamond films has revealed the coexistence of the two mutually antagonistic orderings in this system.

In this talk, a brief overview about quantum confinement and coherence effects in boron-doped polycrystalline diamond will be provided, which demonstrate the vital influence of granularity on the quantum electronic properties of this material. The physics, which we extracted from polycrystalline diamond, can be applied to other granular electronic materials. The talk will focus on our recent observations of a series of emergent quantum phenomena such as giant magnetoresistance, anomalous Hall effect, and magnetic bound states in ferromagnetic superconducting diamond. These intriguing findings make ferromagnetic superconducting diamond an attractive system with which to explore unconventional physics and develop new applications.

In addition, the audience will be briefed on our investigations of phase slips in one-dimensional (1D) superconducting nanowires and unconventional phase transitions in a quasi-1D linear chain compound.
